It is one of the questions we are asked most at our Glendenning factory. Both a fly screen and a security door let fresh air in and keep insects out, so what is the difference, and do you really need a security door?
The short answer
A fly screen is designed to keep insects out. A security door is designed to keep people out, and it keeps insects out as well. The right choice depends on the opening and how you use it.
What a fly screen does
A fly screen is a lightweight aluminium frame with fibreglass or stainless steel mesh. It is ideal for windows and for doors where you simply want airflow without mosquitoes and flies.

What a security door does
A security door uses a much stronger aluminium frame, a tough infill such as marine-grade 316 stainless steel mesh or perforated aluminium, and a multi-point lock. It lets you leave the main door open on a warm evening while the home stays locked.

Australian Standard AS 5039 covers security screen doors and window grilles. If certified performance matters to you, ask any supplier which products are tested to the standard and to see the documentation.

Questions to ask before you order
- Will this door be left open while the house is unattended or overnight?
- Is the opening easy to reach from the street or a side path?
- Do you have pets that push against screens? Stainless mesh handles this better.
- Are you in a strata complex with colour or style rules?
