Two security door quotes can look very different, even for what seems like the same door. That is because a handful of choices make a big difference to the final price. Knowing them helps you compare quotes fairly and avoid paying for something you do not need.
1. The size of the opening
Larger and taller doors need more frame and more infill. Non-standard sizes are common in older Western Sydney homes, and a made-to-measure door will fit properly where an off-the-shelf door will not.
2. The infill
The infill is the panel inside the frame and is one of the biggest factors.
- Marine-grade 316 stainless steel mesh: strong, fine and easy to see through
- Perforated aluminium: a solid sheet with small holes, modern-looking and more private
- Diamond grille with fly mesh: the traditional look, usually the most economical
3. Hinged, sliding or double
A single hinged door is the simplest. Sliding security doors need their own track, and double doors or doors for stacking and bifold openings need more hardware and more fabrication time.
4. Locks and hardware
Triple or multi-point locks, keyed-alike cylinders so one key opens every door, and door closers all add to the cost, and all add real everyday value.
5. Colour
Standard powder-coat colours are usually included. Special or less common colours can take longer and cost more. Matching your windows or front door is worth it for how the house looks from the street.
6. Installation
A good fit matters as much as a good door. Uneven brickwork, old timber frames or tiles at the threshold can add time. Always check whether a quote includes measuring and installation or is supply only.
How to compare quotes
- Check the infill type is the same in each quote.
- Check the lock type and whether keys are keyed alike.
- Check the frame colour and whether it is a standard or special colour.
- Check whether measuring, delivery and installation are included.
- Ask who makes the door and who installs it.
